What is Sacred? 🎧
An excerpt from my latest podcast episode (where I also go to mention Vogons, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Amish 😃)

Sacred can be put in two meanings: First, it can refer to something related to religion or spirituality.

Second, more broadly, it encompassing something cherished, valued, treasured, precious, something held dear in high regard and respect and even reverence - things like values (honesty, integrity in personal relationships, longing for truth, justice, peace, human rights) or experiential like the sparkle in your beloved’s eye, a fluttering of your heart to a memory…or old-growth forests like the Amazon or redwoods, historical landmarks like Stonehenge. Aspirations for knowledge, compassion, and harmony, or even an idea.

I believe each human needs access, an experience of whatever it is one holds in awe, in respect that feels most precious and most worthy of protection. Be one a spiritual person, a devout religious believer, an agnostic or atheist, the need of Sacred is an innate need of human experience if one is to live a life beyond just mere eat, and sleep existence. Imagine a life in which nothing was sacred to you – or anyone else. To me, such a life would be barren and gray.

Something can be sacred to one person, and not to another. Great example is what is currently underway for one of the best known ancient wonders of the world, the 5000+ Stoonehenge monument and Sacred site. In June 2023 UK Govenment gave a go head to burrowing beneath the ritual landscape to build a road tunnel which would cause a “permanent, irreversible harm”, “descecrated” Britain’s most famous World Heritage Site.
