a flower by many other names:
Ylang Ylang, Moto’oi, Flower of Flowers, Apurvachampaka, Cananga Odorata
Summer and fall are the seasons of the elegant Ylang Ylang “Flower of Flowers” in full bloom, filling the air with sweetly-voluptuous and sultry aroma. The trees reach over 40ft in height and require moist climate, and nutrient-rich volcanic soil. Almost all of currently cultivated Ylang Ylang is grown in Madagascar. However, this exquisite tree is one of the treasured aromatic secrets of Hawaii. Ylang Ylang is noted to be one of the finest aromatics in perfumery, and has been used as traditional folk remedy and natural beauty treatment by islanders for centuries. I happen to have a few of these giant trees in my backyard, blossoms of which I’v distilled to create this special facial mist.
Used in aromatherapy, Ylang Ylang is believed to be effective in treating depression, distressed breathing, high blood pressure, anxiety, as an aphrodisiac, and considered as a prospective useful plant to agriculture and medicine 1PMCID: PMC4534619.
Recent studies2ECAM Scientific Journal 2015 PMCID: PMC4534619 have shown a wide variety of beneficial compounds exhibited by the extracts of Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) including antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory, actives. These properties help to effectively reduce skin irritations and redness by regulating sebum production and treating infection. Ylang-ylang is noted to be especially nourishing for combination skin, while its antioxidant-rich compounds help reduce environmental cell damage.
Few more very interesting tid bits
Ylang Ylang flowers attain their peak fragrance 15−20 days after opening, when they have changed colour from green to yellow. The flowers are collected during the early morning hours, when their scent is the strongest, and steam-distilled immediately after the harvest for either hydrosol or essential oil. The first distillation yield consists mainly of the more readily volatile and oxygenated ester constituents and traces of terpenes. This represents 50−60 % of the total extract, producing the highest quality ylang ylang distillation (the distillate quality used in MAHALO’s The FLOWER of FLOWERS mist). In commercial essential oil production, Ylang Ylang is distilled for first, second and sometimes third rounds, yielding yields mainly sesquiterpenes, and a product of lower quality known commercially as Cananga (vs Cananga Odorata). These are often called Ylang Ylang I, Ylang Ylang II, Ylang Ylang III (the more numbers, the lower the quality). Volatile oil yields by steam distillation usually average 1−2 kg per 100 kg of flowers, depending on the quality of the flowers, their handling, and the distillation technology used.
During the early decades of the 20th century, commercial production of natural Ylang Ylang oil was concentrated in the Philippines, Java, India and Madagascar, but since the 1950s commercial production for international markets has become concentrated in the Indian Ocean region, specifically in Madagascar and, especially the Comoros, where Ylang Ylang oil is a very significant export product.
The wood of this tree is very resonant, and is good for making drums. In Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands and elsewhere in the Pacific, the wood is reportedly used for making canoes, furniture (in Hawaii), and for general construction.
Ylang Ylang has a variety of medicinal properties and traditional therapeutic uses. In Tonga and Samoa, the bark is used to treat stomach ailments and as a laxative. In Java, the fresh flowers are pounded into a paste for use in the treatment of asthma, and the dried flowers are reportedly used for treating malaria. Many parts of the tree are used in traditional medicine in India. The fresh flowers are reportedly prescribed as a carminative and in the treatment of asthma, and an infusion of the flowers is used after bathing or rubbed on the skin to prevent skin itching. Also in India, the essential oils from the flowers is used as an external application for treatment of headache, ophthalmia and gout. The leaves are considered useful for treating diarrhea in infants, and rubbed on the skin to relieve itching and boils. The fruits and seeds are used for treating fevers. The bark, rich in alkaloids, is sometimes given as a decoction for treatment of rheumatism, phlegm, ophthalmia, ulcers, fevers, and to improve complexion. The essential oils and distillates are also used in aromatherapy and are thought to be beneficial for treating depression, distressed breathing, high blood pressure, anxiety, and as an aphrodisiac3MANNER, H. What is Hydrosol / Distillate
Hydrosols are the aromatic waters that are extracted from raw botanicals via the process of steam distillation. The steam distillation is achieved by passing a steam through a vat or hopper that contains raw plant materials. The steam causes the cells of the plant material to soften and release their aromatic compounds that are present in tiny sacs or globules within the plant, which are then risen by the steam into a cooling system. This condensed cellular water of the plant contains a gentle water-soluble (hydrophilic) micro-molecules of the constituents found in the Essential Oil of the plant, and is called hydrosol. In Essential Oil production, the process is then continued to separate the floral water from the Essential “oil” (though referred to as oils, are not actual fats), however in case of our hydrosol distillation, the distillate is collected and used whole.
Suzanne Catty, author of Hydrosols – the Next Aromatherapy, states: “…hydrosols can be seen as micro-doses of [essential] oil”. They are also a profound and delightful way to experience and appreciate the life force – with all its potentiality for wholeness – found in the aromatic waters of the plants.
The FLOWER of FLOWERS botanical facial mist features freshly-distilled hydrosol crafted in a copper still specifically to obtain the hydrosol, and not as a co-product of essential oil production, delivering nutrient-rich plan’t cellular water and it’s compotenents.
