Ethically harvested as part of Hawaiian reforestation project, this serene, sacred, sensual, full-bodied, ethereal essence is available for the first time in over 200 years.

When the first people arrived in Hawai’i by canoe, Sandalwood (Santalum freycinetianum and other species, or ‘iliahi, the Hawaiian name for the tree) grew abundantly. They found medicinal and other practical uses for the tree, including using the pulverized wood to scent bark cloth used for clothing and bedding. In the early 1800’s the demand from Asian countries for sandalwood changed Hawaii from a subsistence economy to a materials and products society. Iron tools, furniture, fabrics as well as new plants and animals were all exchanged for Hawaii’s sandalwood forests. Between 1800 and 1830 the sandalwood trade would dominate the Hawaiian economy. But by 1840, the Hawaiian sandalwood trade came to a complete halt due to low supply. For many years the trade fell dormant, and sandalwood was assumed to be extinct. In 1903 the first modern forest reserve system was established, providing new life to Hawaiian sandalwood for the first time in decades. The Hawaiian reforestation project is committed to restoring this important to Hawaii forest.

A nourishing diversion from my regular posts to highlight the magnificent 3 days I spent at the @kauaiwritersconference. With over 400 people in attendance we enjoyed quality line-up of authors (novelists, poets, screenwriters etc), agents, and editors. Equally nourishing were the participants with unique stories, passionate dreams, and inquiring minds.

I didn’t get enough time to take photos until the end of day on Sunday, the lovely @ruthwarewriter from Brighton, UK and @jeankwokauthor from The Netherlands sharing a panel on much helpful techniques for productivity and joy.

We had a pleasure of hearing from salman.rushdie in sharing his #writingismessy encouragement and tips. Certainly felt like a special treat.

Also celebrating 6 months of publishing my book GROUND & BE FREE. Walking away from these 3 days with new ideas, tools, rewarding connections and long list of books I am excited to read.

In the forest of mama Kauai I found REDWOODS! 🔉Babies compared to California redwoods who are some over 2000 years old. The ones on Kauai are about a 100, give or take, still infants in comparison. But oh what beauty and serenity. When I feel lonely, I speak with trees 🌳 , they have stories to share. Some are their own, some they collected through their vast network of roots from other side of the island. It’s fascinating, their wisdom and communication.

At peace in Waimea Canyon. People come, people go, Mother Earth remains.
