Ethically harvested as part of Hawaiian reforestation project, this serene, sacred, sensual, full-bodied, ethereal essence is available for the first time in over 200 years.

When the first people arrived in Hawai’i by canoe, Sandalwood (Santalum freycinetianum and other species, or ‘iliahi, the Hawaiian name for the tree) grew abundantly. They found medicinal and other practical uses for the tree, including using the pulverized wood to scent bark cloth used for clothing and bedding. In the early 1800’s the demand from Asian countries for sandalwood changed Hawaii from a subsistence economy to a materials and products society. Iron tools, furniture, fabrics as well as new plants and animals were all exchanged for Hawaii’s sandalwood forests. Between 1800 and 1830 the sandalwood trade would dominate the Hawaiian economy. But by 1840, the Hawaiian sandalwood trade came to a complete halt due to low supply. For many years the trade fell dormant, and sandalwood was assumed to be extinct. In 1903 the first modern forest reserve system was established, providing new life to Hawaiian sandalwood for the first time in decades. The Hawaiian reforestation project is committed to restoring this important to Hawaii forest.
