Fruit and oil has been highly regarded in both modern and traditional medicine, used by the Egyptians, Mayans, and Native Americans for its healing and nourishing properties. The therapeutic potential of the plant is based on its antioxidant effects caused by its phytochemical composition. Mainly composed of linolenic, linoleic (Omega-6), trans-retinoic acids (Vitamin A), as well as ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), and phenolic compounds, as published in 2004 by Journal of the American Oil Chemists’ Society.

Of the two main varieties of Rosehip, we are using Rosa rubiginosa, regarded for its high trans-retinoic acid content. Extracted from seeds of rose hip, the oil contains substantial UFAs. The most abundant fatty acid is linoleic acid (35.9–54.8%), followed by α-linolenic acid (16.6–26.5%), and oleic acid (14.7–22.1%). Due its high composition of UFAs and antioxidants, this oil has relatively high protection against inflammation and oxidative stress. The efficacy of topical rose hip seed oil has been clinically tested on different inflammatory dermatitis such as eczema, neurodermatitis, and cheilitis, showing promising findings of the topical use of rose hip seed oil on these inflammatory dermatoses.
